2018 Confucius Institute Scholarship Application Procedure of Jilin University

With aims to cultivate qualified Chinese language teachers and facilitate the promotion and understanding of Chinese culture, Confucius Institute Scholarship (CIS) has been launched by Confucius Institute Headquarters/Hanban for outstanding students, scholars and Chinese language teachers recommended by overseas Confucius Institutes (independently operated classrooms) and some HSK Test Centers (collectively referred to as “recommending institutions”) to study in Chinese universities (collectively referred to as “host institutions”).

As one of the host institutions, Jilin University welcomes students from all over the world to apply for this scholarship.

Ⅰ. ELIGIBILITY

All applicants shall be

1) Non-Chinese citizens

2) In good physical and mental condition, well performed both academically and behaviorally

3) Aspired to take future careers on the teaching or international promotion of Chinese language.

4) Between the ages of 16-35 by September 1st, 2018. (Applicants currently worked as Chinese language teachers shall not exceed the age limit of 45, while undergraduate students shall not exceed the age limit of 25).

II. SCHOLARSHIP CATEGORIES AND APPLICATION REQUIREMENTS

1. Scholarship for Master’s Degree in Teaching Chinese to Speakers of Other Languages (MTCSOL) students

This programme commences from September 2018 and provides scholarship for maximum two academic years. Applicants shall be Bachelor degree holders, and have a minimum score of 210 in HSK Test (Level 5) as well as 60 in HSKK test (Intermediate Level). Applicants who are able to provide notarized document of the employment agreement or related proofs upon completing study in China are preferred.

2. Scholarship for Bachelor’s Degree in Teaching Chinese to Speakers of Other Languages (BTCSOL) Students

This programme commences from September 2018 and provides scholarship for maximum four academic years. Applicants must have graduated with a high school diploma, and have a minimum score of 210 in HSK Test (Level 4) as well as 60 in HSKK test (Intermediate Level).

3. Scholarship for One-Academic-Year Study Students

This programme commences from September 2018 and provides scholarship for maximum 11 months. International students currently studying in China are not eligible.

3.1 TCSOL

Applicants shall have a minimum score of 270 in HSK test (Level 3), while HSKK test score is required.

3.2 Chinese Language and Literature, Chinese History, Chinese Philosophy

Applicants shall have a minimum score of 180 in HSK test (Level 4) and 60 in HSKK test (Intermediate Level).

3.3 Chinese Language Study

Applicants shall have a minimum score of 180 in HSK test (Level 3).

4. Scholarship for One-Semester Study Students

This programme commences from September 2018 and March 2019 and provides scholarship for maximum 5 months. Applicants with holding visas X1 or X2 are not eligible.

4.1 TCSOL, Chinese Language and Literature, Chinese History, Chinese Philosophy

Applicants shall have a minimum score of 210 in HSK test (Level 3), while HSKK test score is required.

4.2 Traditional Chinese Medicine and Taiji Culture

HSK test score is required.

5. Scholarship for Four-Week Study Students

This programme commences from July or December 2018 and provides a four-week scholarship. Applicants with holding visas X1 or X2 are not eligible.

5.1 Traditional Chinese Medicine and Taiji Culture

HSK test score is required.

5.2 Chinese Language and Homestay Experience in a Chinese Family

HSK test score is required. Organized and applied by a Confucius Institute with 10-15 participants per group. A detailed study plan shall be made after consultation with host institutions and then submit to Hanban for approval.

5.3 Special Four-week Program for Confucius Institutes

HSK test score is required. Organized and applied by a Confucius Institute with 10-15 participants per group.

III. APPLICATION PROCEDURES

Online registration will be available from March 1th, 2018 on the Confucius Institute Scholarship website (cis.chinese.cn). Please log in the website to search recommended institutions and host institutions, upload application materials online, track the application progress, feedback of admission results and scholarship review. Scholarship holders need to confirm with the host institutions to go through the procedures of studying in China, print out CIS certificate online, and register at host institutions at the designated date and time as per the letter of admission.

The application deadlines are

1. April 20th (for those commencing in July)

2. June 20th (for those commencing in September)

3. September 20th (for those commencing in December)

4. December 20th (for those commencing in March 2019)

Hanban will complete the scholarship review and notify the results two months before enrollment of the admitted students.

IV. CHINESE BRIDGE AWARD RECIPIENT POLICIES

Chinese Bridge award winners who have been awarded the 2018 “Confucius Institute Scholarship Certificate” shall log onto the scholarship website and submit documents to relevant host institutions upon presentation of their CIS certificates.

V. OTHERS

1. Degree applicants should take part in the annual review, see the Annual Evaluation Method of Confucius Institutute Scholarship Holders.

2. Those who fail to register on time, fail to pass the health assessment, drop out midway or suspend their study will be deprived of scholarship.

3. Courses start from September 2018 or March 2019 in Jilin University. Please see the Letter of Admission of Jinlin University for detailed time of enrollment.

4. Online application deadline: May 31, 2018.

Appendix 1

Confucius Institute Scholarship Coverage and Criteria

The Confucius Institute Scholarship provides full coverage on tuition fee, accommodation fee, living allowance (four-week study students are excluded) and comprehensive medical insurance expenses.

I. Tuition fee is under the overall planning and utilization of host institutions to provide teaching management, cultural activities as well as Chinese language proficiency tests organizing for scholarship holders. Textbook fees and admission fees of tourist attractions fees are excluded.

II. Accommodation fee is under the overall planning and utilization of host institutions. Free apartments (usually double room) are available for international students in the first academic year in Jilin University. In the second academic year, degree students are required to pay for accommodation. Students can either apply for international student apartments on campus or live off campus. For those who live off campus with the permission of the university are entitled to accommodation allowance by month or by quarter. The allowance criterion is RMB 700 per person on monthly basis.

III. Living allowance is granted to full scholarship holders by host institutions on monthly basis. Undergraduates, one-academic-year students and one-semester students are granted with 2,500 RMB per person per month, MTCSOL students are granted with 3,000 RMB per person per month.

Scholarship holders are required to complete enrollment procedures within designated date; otherwise, their scholarship may be canceled. Students who enroll before the 15th (or on the 15th) of the admission month are entitled to full allowance of that month. Students who enroll after the 15th are only to half of the allowance of that month.

During the study, for any student who is absent from China for more than 15 days due to personal reasons (excluding winter and summer holidays), the allowance will be suspended during the absence.

For students who suspend study or drop out of school due to personal reasons, or receive disciplinary punishment from the university, allowance will be terminated on the date of schooling suspension, dropping out or when the decision of punishment is announced.

The living allowance for the month of graduation will be granted half a month after the date of graduation or expiration day of the study confirmed by the host institution.

IV. Comprehensive medical insurance is purchased by the host institution in accordance with relevant regulations of studying in China stipulated by the Ministry of Education of China. Insurance fee per person is 160 CNY for four-week study students, 400 CNY for one-semester students, and 800 CNY per year for students engaged in program longer than one academic year.

Appendix 2

Application Documents for Confucius Institute Scholarship

I. Documents Required of all applicants

1) A scanned copy of the passport photo page.

2) Scanned copies of score reports of HSK and HSKK (within two years).

3) Recommendation letter signed by head of the recommending institutions.

II. Certificates related to academic qualifications

4) Certification of the highest education diploma (or proof of expected graduation), and an official transcript.

5) Applicants for MTCSOL students are required to provide two references from professors or associate professors. Those who can provide an employment agreement or related documents with the designated teaching institution are preferred.

III. Applicants currently working as Chinese language teachers shall provide the proof of employment as well as a reference letter by the employing institution.

IV. Applicants under the age of 18 shall provide certified documents of designation signed by their entrusted legal guardians in China.

V. Applicants shall also provide additional documents required by the host institutions.

About Jilin University

1. General Information
